Quite often, we may have situations where we may be required to take more medicines than one for different medical conditions. One such situation could be where a patient is suffering from ADHD and depression at the same time. In such situations, it may become necessary to give both; Vyvanse and Celexa at the same time. Under such situations, it is necessary to be aware of the interactions that could be caused by the use of both the drugs simultaneously. In this article, we will try and find out various drug interactions between vyvanse and celexa (citalopram). Though generally both the drugs seem work together in tandem as for patients it would always be better to have a close look at the various drug interactions between vyvanse and celexa (citalopram); so that preventive action can be taken by either stopping one of the drug or by reducing the dosage that is being administered into such patients.
Though the actual interaction between the two drugs is not clear, there are many cases which point to the fact that the use of Celexa may have some pharmacologic response when they are used together with sympathomimetic agents like Vyvanse. There have been instances where some patients have shown signs of racing thoughts, jitteriness, dry eyes, cramps in the stomach and other such problems. There have also been a few instances where the patients have also exhibited other vyvance side effects ranging from tremors to palpitations and restlessness. This was all the more pronounced in cases where either of the drugs was taken within a gap of one week from one another. This could perhaps be due to the long life of Celexa. The drug interaction between vyvanse and celexa could also be risky because of the fact that sympathomimetic agents like Vyvanse could have in them some type of serotonergic activity and hence they should not be given in conjunction with serotonine reuptake inhibitors like Celexa. This could very rarely cause a syndrome that is known as serotonin syndrome which could also become fatal for the patient. So it is better to discontinue both the drugs temporarily in patients who have showed such side effects.
Hence, given the above situations it is very clear that it is always better to avoid the use of Vyvanse and Celexa together. If it becomes almost unavoidable, then there should be very close monitoring of the patient for any possible drug interactions between vyvanse and celexa (citalopram). Of all the side effects, it is very important to keep a close watch on serotonin syndrome which is very dangerous and could lead to the fatalities if not handled carefully. It would be necessary to watch for this syndrome because it could come unannounced. There are some classic symptoms that are associated with serotonin syndrome and the same are given below. It could include altered level of consciousness, getting irritated easily, hallucination, confusion and coma. In serious cases, it could also result in various other problems such as hyperthermia, tachycardia, shivering, increased levels of blood pressures. There could also be instances of neuromuscular abnormalities ranging from hyperreflxia, tremor, rigidity, mycolonus and eve ataxia.
Under the above circumstances, it would be better to avoid taking both these drug together. However, if it becomes necessary to take them together then the best way to go about it would be to take the advice and counsel from the doctor or the service provider. The drugs could be taken after the necessary intervals instead of being taken together.
Coming to some mild side effects that could be caused because of drug interactions between vyvanse and celexa, let us have a look at them over the next few lines. Insomnia has been a major side effect because of the combination use of this drug. There have been instances where patients have found themselves out of sleep for nights at length because of this drug. Headache, a feeling of depression while being on anti depressants, changing body temperature every now and then, anxiety, anorexia and unable to concentrate and disturbed attention levels are some of the other problems that have been associated with the use of both the above mentioned drugs simultaneously. Taking the above factors into consideration, combined use of both the drugs should be avoided unless of course it becomes extremely necessary from the patients’ and doctors’ points of view.
